What is the McGurk effect?

چکیده

McGurk and MacDonald (1976) reported a powerful multisensory illusion occurring with audiovisual speech. They recorded a voice articulating a consonant and dubbed it with a face articulating another consonant. Even though the acoustic speech signal was well recognized alone, it was heard as another consonant after dubbing with incongruent visual speech. The illusion has been termed the McGurk effect. It has been replicated many times, and it has sparked an abundance of research. The reason for the great impact is that this is a striking demonstration of multisensory integration. It shows that auditory and visual information is merged into a unified, integrated percept. It is a very useful research tool since the strength of the McGurk effect can be taken to reflect the strength of audiovisual integration. Here I shall make two main claims regarding the definition and interpretation of the McGurk effect since they bear relevance to its use as a measure of multisensory integration. First, the McGurk effect should be defined as a categorical change in auditory perception induced by incongruent visual speech, resulting in a single percept of hearing something other than what the voice is saying. Second, when interpreting the McGurk effect, it is crucial to take into account the perception of the unisensory acoustic and visual stimulus components. There are many variants of the McGurk effect (McGurk and MacDonald, 1976; MacDonald and McGurk, 1978)1. The best-known case is when dubbing a voice saying [b] onto a face articulating [g]

Native-Foreign Langage Effect In The McGurk Effect : A Test With Chinese and Japanese

This study examined the manners of audiovisual speech perception, using the “McGurk effect”, when the speakers were foreigners. The McGurk effect demonstrates that visual (lip movement) information is used during speech perception even when it is discrepant with auditory information. Subjects, 17 Chinese and 23 Japanese reported what they heard while looking at and listening to the speakers’ fa...

o you see what you are hearing? Cross-modal effects of speech sounds on ipreading

It is well known that visual information derived from mouth movements (i.e., lipreading) can have profound effects on auditory speech identification (e.g. the McGurk-effect [16]). Here we examined the reverse phenomenon, namely whether auditory speech affects lipreading. We report that speech sounds 4 December 2009 ccepted 9 January 2010

The Influence of Quality of Information on the McGurk Effect

Quality of information in the McGurk effect was manipulated by using auditory stimuli that spanned a wide range of intelligibility, and by adding auditory and/or visual noise. Questions were whether responses are affected by subjects' awareness of the variation in stimulus quality, and whether quality of information affects type as well as number of McGurk responses. Expt 1 established the audi...

Visual attention during L1 and L2 sounds perception: an eye-tracking study

Visual information affects speech perception as demonstrated by the McGurk effect (McGurk & McDonald, 1976): when audio /ba/ is dubbed with a visual /ga/, what is perceived is /da/. This study aims at observing how visual information, intended as articulatory orofacial movements, is processed by eye, i.e., if gaze is related to articulatory information processing. The results indicate that visu...

Face configuration affects speech perception: Evidence from a McGurk mismatch negativity study

We perceive identity, expression and speech from faces. While perception of identity and expression depends crucially on the configuration of facial features it is less clear whether this holds for visual speech perception. Facial configuration is poorly perceived for upside-down faces as demonstrated by the Thatcher illusion in which the orientation of the eyes and mouth with respect to the fa...
